Visibility and lines of sight through a designed space, especially in a working environment, are specifically enforced to bring order. The perception of being continually watched ensures individuals subconsciously act in a suitable manner in the designated space due to the feeling of being scrutinised by somebody of power.[3]
Curzon Building- Birmingham City University
Your presence is initially logged through a key card access, with your identification picture appearing on screen for security to check. This is the only access to the building, ensuring only valid students and visitors are given access to the university’s facilities.
Security cameras are discreetly located in all corners of the space, recording the whole area. Although the footage is not continually monitored, filtered footage may be obtained by security if an incident occurs. The amount of cameras and their apparent presence within the space is necessary to ensure this is highlighted to all to maintain order within the space, especially due to the facility having a 24 hour opening period.
There is a line of sight throughout the space to minimise hidden areas. This is ensured by the layout of furniture, as well as key furnishes such as: lowered pod walls, controlled height levels within working areas and reflective glass panels.
Uncontrolled space is becoming harder and harder to find. Apart from our own homes, washrooms and suburban areas, we are more often than not being recorded for security purposes.
